MIT Places Five on Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-District Teams
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five student-athletes from the MIT men’s and women’s track & field and cross country teams were named to the Capital One Academic All-District One team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Senior Stephen Serene (Washington, D.C.), junior Kyle Hannon (Park Ridge, Ill.) and sophomore Tyler Singer-Clark (Falmouth, Mass.) were honored on the men’s side while senior Portia Jones (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Lauren Kuntz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) landed on the women’s squad.

Three Tech Cross Country Runners Earn All-Academic Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three runners from the MIT men’s and women’s cross country teams were recently honored with All-Academic accolades from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Seniors Daniel Harper (Naperville, Ill.) and Stephen Serene (Washington, D.C.) were recognized on the men’s side while sophomore Martina de Geus (Los Altos, Calif.) was the lone honoree from the women’s team.

MIT Takes Fifth at NCAA Cross Country Championship
OSH KOSH, Wis. – Freshman Elaine McVay (San Ramon, Calif.) led the way with a 38th-place finish as the MIT women’s cross country team placed fifth out of 32 teams at the NCA A Division III championship in Osh Kosh, Wis. on Saturday. McVay finished 38th overall and was the fifth-best freshman finisher at the championship. It was the third consecutive season that MIT has finished in the top 5 at the national championship.

Tech Prepares for NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ranked No. 7 in the country, the MIT women’s cross country team will travel to Oshkosh, Wis. this weekend for the NCAA Division III championship. The Engineers finished third at nationals a year ago and have placed in the top 10 in each of the past three years, a streak that coach Halston Taylor hopes his squad can continue on Saturday. The championship will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The women’s 6k begins at 12:00 p.m. with the men’s eight-kilometer race to follow at 1:00 p.m.

Women's Cross Country Finishes Third at New England Division III Championship
BRUNSWICK, Main – A pair of Tech harriers placed in the top seven, as the No. 5 ranked MIT women’s cross country squad placed third at this weekend’s New England Division III championship hosted by Bowdoin College. The Engineers accumulated 134 team points to finish behind defending champion, Middlebury College, and Williams College.

NEWMAC Announces Fall Academic All-Conference Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A league-leading 45 athletes represented MIT on the 2011 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Fall Academic All-Conference Team. Criteria includes a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale, achieving second year academic status at his or her institution, and being a member of a varsity team for the entire season.

MIT Cross Country Teams Prepare for New England Regional
BRUNSWICK, Main – Ranked as two of the top teams in the region, the MIT men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Bowdoin College for this weekend’s New England Division III championship. The men will look to defend their regional crown from 2010, while the women hope to return to the top spot in New England after finishing fourth a year ago.

Taylor Sweeps NEWMAC Coach of the Year Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After leading his squad to a pair of New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) cross country titles on Monday, Halston Taylor was named the Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams by the conference on Thursday. This marks the second time that Taylor has received the conference awards for both genders, after previously doing so in 2007, his first year with the women’s team.

Women’s Cross Country Captures Fifth Straight NEWMAC Crown
BOSTON, Mass. – Ten different runners earned all-conference honors, as the no. five ranked MIT women’s cross country team captured its fifth-straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship on Monday afternoon. The Engineers finished with a team score of 22 points to pull away from second-place Wellesley College, which had a total of 50 points.

NEWMAC Cross Country Championship Postponed Until Monday
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced today the postponement of its men’s and women’s cross country championship until Monday, October 31. The meet, originally scheduled for Sunday, will still be held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. and will begin with the men’s race at 3:00 p.m. followed by the women at 4:00 p.m.

Tech Women Take Second at Nationals Preview
OSHKOSH, Wis. – Competing among a competitive field, including 12 teams currently ranked in the USTFCCCA top 25, at the site of this year’s NCAA Division III championship, the No.5 ranked MIT women’s cross country team more than held its own, finishing 2nd out of 43 teams at the Brooks Invitational on Saturday. Brooke Johnson (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Elaine McVay (San Ramon, Calif.) were among the top 10 individual finishers as Tech accumulated 123 team points.

MIT Finishes Eighth at All-New England Championship
BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT women’s cross country team, ranked third in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll, finished eighth overall at the All-New England championship on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers were led by Elaine McVay (San Ramon, Calif.), in 21st place, as they totaled 276 points as a team.

No. 3 MIT Takes First Place at Bowdoin Invite
BRUNSWICK, Maine – Nationally-ranked No. 3 MIT edged host Bowdoin College by two points in the team standings to take first place among a competitive 10-team field on Saturday at the Bowdoin Cross Country Invite. Freshman Stephanie Marzen (McLean, Va.) led the way for the Engineers with her seventh-place finish.

Mattocks, Taylor Collect NEWMAC Weekly Accolades

No. 4 MIT Captures Sixth Straight Engineer’s Cup title
BOSTON, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 4 MIT women’s cross country squad had five of the top seven finishers to easily capture the team title at the Engineer’s Cup over RPI and WPI on Saturday afternoon at Boston’s Franklin Park. Alexandra Taylor (Harbor Springs, Mich.) took the top spot overall as Tech finished with 23 team points, well ahead of runner-up RPI’s total of 41.

Tech Cross Country Teams Earn Spots in Preseason National Rankings
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released this year’s national preseason cross country coaches’ poll on Wednesday and both the MIT men’s and women’s teams found themselves among the tops in the country to open the 2011 campaign. Both squads are coming off tremendous finishes in 2010, as the women placed third at the NCAA Division III championship and the men were 12th nationally.
