Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: U.S. Coast Guard Academy 17, MIT 10

- Records: MIT (7-6, 2-1 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (10-2, 3-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: New London, Conn. (Cadet Memorial Field)

- The Lead: In a battle of undefeated NEWMAC men's lacrosse teams, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy topped MIT, 17-10, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Aidan Westley (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and first-year James Santoro (Tewksbury, N.J.) both produced five points for the Engineers, Westley with three goals and two assists while Santoro had one goal and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Coast Guard got on the scoreboard after 1:12 elapsed but Santoro found sophomore Gavin Vandenberg (Elmhurst, Ill.) for the equalizer just over a minute later. The Bears responded with five unanswered goals, including a pair of man-up strikes. MIT ended its scoring drought when first-year Andy Shin (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) redirected a feed from classmate Jack Montinaro (Riverside, Conn.) with 28 seconds left, making the score 6-2.

- Coast Guard once again had an early marker in the second quarter, but a defensive battle ensued until the Bears found the back of the net at the 5:46 mark. First-year Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif.) scored 54 seconds later, however, Coast Guard won the ensuing faceoff and quickly increased its lead to 9-3. Sophomore Oliver Heins (Fair Haven, N.J.) provided the final goal of the half with 1:13 left.

- The hosts controlled the action in the third quarter as they outscored the Engineers, 3-1, resulting in a 12-5 advantage. Westley accounted for MIT's only goal, which occurred with 35 seconds remaining.

- In the fourth quarter, senior Jake Stein (Vienna, Va.) connected on a Santoro pass after 47 seconds expired. Coast Guard responded with four straight goals, establishing a 16-6 margin at the 8:35 mark. Despite the deficit the Engineers continued to attack, generating a 4-1 run during the final 4:08 of the game.
