THE BASICS:

- The Lead: In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the MIT men's lacrosse team pulled away for a 12-5 win over Johnson & Wales in non-conference play at Steinbrenner Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the opening 2:45 of play as senior Jake Stein (Vienna, Va.), junior Jonathan Monahemi (Great Neck, N.Y.) and sophomore Mark Heatzig (Boca Raton, Fla.) all found the back of the net. The Wildcats countered with a 3-0 run of their own over a stretch of 6:06, sparked by the 21st goal of the year from Ben Farrell, to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:18 left in the first.

- MIT closed the first quarter with a quick 3-0 run for the 6-3 edge and the score remained that way until 5:35 remaining in the second period. Overall, the scoring spurt for the Engineers was 9-0 spanning a total of 32:34, led by a pair of goals by Nicolas Gianni (Henderson, Nev.).

- The Wildcats had the lone scoring in the fourth quarter as Farrell tallied the game's lone man-up goal and Chris Calisto closed the game with his third goal of the season with 2:52 on the clock for the 12-5 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

- First-year James Santoro (Tewksbury, N.J.) led the Engineers with seven points on one goal and six assists, while Nicolas Gianni and Monahemi each had two goals apiece.

- For JWU, Farrell posted four points on two goals and two assists as he connected on two of his four shots on goal. 

- Stephen Gregg won 4-of-16 faceoffs for the Wildcats, while sophomore Luke Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) was 7-of-8 for MIT and senior Mitchell Galer (Westlake Village, Calif.) was 10-for-13.

- In the team stats, MIT outshot Johnson & Wales 38-25 and held a 39-18 advantage in groundballs. The Wildcats forced 24 MIT turnovers as the two teams combined for 24-of-27 in clear attempts.

- Seniors Alexander Lynch (Roswell, Ga.) and Victor Fink (Haverford, Pa.) split time in goal for the Engineers, with Lynch earning the victory after a seven-save outing in the first half. For the Wildcats, Kyle Mangan took the loss after an 11-save performance over 60 minutes.
