Men's Soccer Places 14 on NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Squad

Westwood, Mass. (November 7) – A league best 14 student-athletes from the MIT men's soccer program have earned Academic All-Conference accolades from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) this season.

The Engineers saw ten or more student-athletes honored for the seventh consecutive season dating back to the 2013 campaign. Just behind MIT was Clark University and WPI with ten honorees apiece. Across eight teams in the league, a total of 57 student-athletes were chosen to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team in 2019.

Seniors Darian Bhathena (Andover, Mass.), Ivan Jutamulia (Berkeley, Calif.), Isaac Perper (Tiburon, Calif.) and Theo Sechopoulos (Athens, Greece) all earned their third straight nod to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team this year, while juniors Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.), Justin Cordero (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Aaron Makikalli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) were placed on the Academic All-Conference squad for the second time in their respective careers. In addition, sophomores Scott Becker (McLean, Va.), Kaleb Blake (Los Angeles, Calif.), Garrett Gordon (The Woodlands, Texas), Luka Godevic (Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenia), Nicholas Jordan (Glen Allen, Va.), Manuel Morales (Schertz, Texas) and Sebastian Simon (Detroit, Mich.) all earned the honor for the first time in 2019.

Honorees must have met the following criteria to be eligible: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.5/4.0 scale or a 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2019 spring semester, achieved second-year academic status at their institution and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

MIT closed its 2019 campaign on Tuesday evening in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament. The Engineers finished the year with a 7-5-6 record and qualified for the postseason for the third straight season and 21st time overall in program history.
