POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – MIT's No. 14 women's tennis team wrapped up its two-game weekend road trip in fine style, defeating No. 38 Vassar College, 9-0. Junior Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) was one of four Engineers that came away with a pair of wins on the afternoon. MIT improved to 12-6 with the win while Vassar fell to 11-7.
MIT picked up the first point of the day in doubles when it's No. 1 team of junior Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) scored an 8-2 win. The Engineers then had to fight to come up with the doubles sweep, taking a pair of close matches to go up 3-0. At No. 2 sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) and freshman Kelly Zhu (Houston, Texas) held off senior Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, Pa.) and sophomore Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, Calif.) from Vassar, 9-7. In an equally close one at No. 3 the Engineers' pair of Lai and junior Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) scored an 8-6 decision over senior Kelsy Van Noy (Houston, Texas) and freshman Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, Mich.).
In singles play MIT picked up straight sets victories in the first four flights. At No. 1 it was Tzeng who won her fifth straight match with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Das won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, as did senior Iris Zhuang (Allen, Texas) at No. 4. In the No. 3 match it was Kong holding off junior Shayna Becker (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), 7-5 in the first set before taking the second, 6-1, to claim the win.
A pair of three-set matches came in the Nos. 5 and 6 matchups. Lai came back from a set down at No. 5 to take a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Flournoy. In the No. 6 match sophomore Rena Liu (Oak Hill, Va.) and junior Connie Yoo (Irvine, Calif.) split their first two sets as well before Liu came back in the third to win, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
MIT will play its final regular season match next Saturday when it hosts Middlebury College on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m.
