WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Sophomore Hannah Chen (Los Gatos, Calif.) ran the fastest time in the country in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.01) yesterday afternoon at the Dick Farley Invitational, a dual meet between the No. 6 MIT women's track and field team and the No. 10 ranked Williams College women's track and field team. After the competition was complete, the Ephs edged the Engineers by a final team score of 111-91.
Chen also teamed up with the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay squads for wins on the afternoon. The 4x100 quartet of sophomore Nneoma Okonkwo (Lagos, Nigeria), junior Natalie Alper (Columbia, Md.) and classmate Kendra Knittel (Tucson, Ariz.) edged the Williams team by 0.01-seconds with a time of 48.40. Later in the meet, Knittel, Alper and Chen ran with freshman Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) for first place in the 4x400m relay in 3:59.61.
In the field events, five Engineers won six individual events highlighted by junior Jackie Vahey's (Winchester, Mass.) two victories in both the discus and hammer throws. The junior notched personal records in both throws as she notched a distance of 141-feet, 6-inches (43.12m) in the discus and 168-feet, 8-inches (51.42m) in the hammer.
Junior Jennifer Tylock (Shrewsbury, Mass.) set a PR in the pole vault with a best leap of 12-feet, 2-inches (3.71m) for first place. Sophomore Ariela Slutsky (Weston, Fla.) registered personal bests in all three throwing events she was entered into. In the shot put the sophomore placed first with a throw of 41-feet, 3.75-inches (12.59m), in the discus where she took second with a distance of 132-feet, 6-inches (40.38m) and followed that up with second in the hammer with a best toss of 147-feet, 6-inches (44.95m).
As a team, MIT swept the top three places in the long jump, the shot put, the hammer throw and placed five in the top-6 in the hammer. On top of her performance in the 4x100 relay, Okonkwo won the long jump with a best leap of 17-feet, 10.75-inches and was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.47-seconds (a personal best time).
Behind Okonkwo in the long jump was Chen in second with a leap of 17-feet, 7-inches (5.36m) and sophomore Haley Strouf (Rice Lake, Wis.) in third with a personal best distance of 17-feet, 6-inches (5.33m). Strouf also bested her mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 134-feet, 8-inches (41.05m) for fifth place.
On the track, MIT grabbed five second place finishes on the afternoon. Knittel crossed the line in a time of 59.41-second in the 400-meter dash, Tregoning took second in the 800-meter run in 2:15.49, junior Maryann Gong (Livermore, Calif.) ran a 4:37.40 in the 1,500-meter run, freshman Jenny Xu (Cupertino, Calif.) registered a time of 18:08.33 in the 5,000-meter run and Chen notched a time of 15.11-second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Two Engineers also crossed the finish line with personal records against Williams. With seventh place in the 1,500m, sophomore Mary Eccles (Wahiawa, Hawaii) topped her PR in a time of 4:56.19, while freshman Bailee Margolis (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) registered a time of 18:43.03 in the 5,000m for sixth place in the event.
MIT returns to action next weekend as some members of the team will head to Princeton University on Friday, April 22 for the Larry Ellis Invitational, while others will compete at home in the Sean Collier Invitational on Saturday, April 23 beginning at 10:15 a.m. from Steinbrenner Stadium.
