New Orleans, La. (November 30) -- MIT women's cross country sophomore Izzi Gengaro (Boonton Township, N.J.) was recently named as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) New England Regional Athlete of the Year.

Posting one of the best seasons in MIT women's cross country history, Gengaro finished 10th at the NCAA Division III National Championship. The Engineers finished seventh overall out of 32 teams as the 10th-place showing from Gengaro was the top individual finish in program history.

Gengaro claimed the NEWMAC Championship individual crown and the NCAA New England Regional Championship, crossing in times of 21:58 and 21:19.1, respectively. After earning NEWMAC Athlete of the Year honors, Gengaro became the fourth MIT student-athlete to win the NCAA Regional and the first since Maryann Gong in 2015.
