THE BASICS:
- Location: Elsah, Ill. (Principia North Farm Course - Hosted by Principia College)
- The Lead: Led by an All-American performance from junior Leandra Zimmermann (Augsburg, Germany), the No. 2 ranked MIT women's cross country team placed fourth out of 32 teams with 210 points at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Zimmermann earns All-American honors for the first time as she finished 30th in a time of 21:27.90 to lead the Engineers. Senior Mary Eccles (Wahiawa, Hawaii) capped off her MIT cross country career with a 53rd-place finish as she was the second MIT runner in 21:49.90. Sophomore Megan McCandless (Livermore, Calif.), an All-American last season, finished in 58th place with a time of 21:53.70 over the six-kilometer course.
- Sophomore Marissa McPhillips (Narragansett, R.I.) was the fourth Engineer to finish in 69th place, running a time of 21:59.30. The final scorer for MIT was sophomore Katie Bacher (Macungie, Pa.) in 111th place, crossing in 22:16.20. Freshman Emily Niu (Painted Post, N.Y.) finished 139th in her first nationals meet, running 22:31.60 to round out the MIT finishers.
- As a team, MIT has now finished in the top five for four straight seasons and now has 10 straight top-10 showings.
