THE BASICS:
Â
- Score: MIT 38, WPI 10
Â
- Records: MIT (5-4, 3-3 NEWMAC); WPI (3-7, 2-4 NEWMAC)
Â
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)
Â
- The Lead: On a rainy Senior Night game on Saturday, the MIT football team rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to come away with a convincing 38-10 home victory over WPI in what was the final regular-season Division III game in the nation this weekend. The game was delayed for 90 minutes due to a strong cell of rain and lightning that came through the Boston area close to the scheduled kickoff time of 5:30 pm. The Engineers did recognize the 27 members of the Senior Class and their contributions to the program with an on-field ceremony prior to the weather delay.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- WPI got on the board first with a 32-yard field goal off the foot of
Bryce Wade, followed by a 50-yard touchdown catch by
Isaac Frederique from
Brendan Olexa for the 10-0 WPI advantage midway through the first. On the TD play, Olexa unloaded a beautiful pass as the MIT defender slipped on the wet turf and converted the opportunity into the game's first touchdown.
Â
- MIT answered with 3:09 remaining in the first on an 18-yard TD run from senior
George Stultz (Frederick, Md.) as he fought off a number of tacklers to cut the lead to 10-7. The lone score of the second quarter came via the legs of
Ashton Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) as he went straight up the middle for the one-yard touchdown that capped a 10-play drive and gave MIT the 14-10 edge at halftime.
Â
- The hosts put together an incredible second-half performance and ended the game with 38 unanswered points, which begun with a 32-yard field goal from graduate student
Mark Wright (Fort Worth, Texas) that just squeaked over the crossbar. From there, graduate student
Chris Mauck (Wellington, Fla.) found senior
Dennis Gastel (Lincoln, R.I.) with a screen pass on a play where WPI blitzed and that led to an easy touchdown for the 24-10 edge.
Â
- The end of the third-quarter scoring was set up by a tremendous interception on the near sideline by senior
Ty Allen (Nashville, Tenn.) as he caught the pick and got his foot down just inbounds. On the next play, Mauck found senior
Ben Dwyer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) over the top for a 34-yard scoring strike to cap a nine-second drive that put the game out of reach at 31-10.
Â
- The final touchdown of the game came in the fourth as sophomore
Brady Klein (Washington, Ill.) busted a game-high 59-yard run up the far sideline to account for the 38-10 final as MIT defeated WPI for the second straight meeting in the all-time series.
Â
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- MIT amassed a commanding 262 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, led by 96 yards from Klein and 87 by Stultz. Mauck was excellent as well, completing 11-of-15 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
Â
- Defensively, MIT senior
Paul Calvetti (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted his fifth double-digit tackle game of the year as he tallied 10 stops that included one sack for three yards and one quarterback hurry. He ended the year with 102 total tackles and leads the NEWMAC in total tackles and tackles per game.
