No. 13 Men's Soccer Drops 4-1 Final in NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 2 Babson College 4, No. 1 MIT 1

- Records: MIT (13-4-2); Babson College (11-4-3)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: A three-goal, second-half surge helped No. 2 seeded Babson to a 4-1 win over top-seeded MIT on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. The win is Babson's ninth NEWMAC Tournament Championship since 2002 and gives the Beavers the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. In addition, Babson senior Giancarlo Arguello was named as the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Babson and the visiting crowd came out firing early as Jack Dugan found the back of the net just 3:55 in as the Beavers had relentless pressure on offense to start the game. MIT quickly settled in though and held a slight advantage over much of the remainder of the half.

- MIT's best scoring chance came with just under 18 minutes left in the first half as Babson keeper Itai Rubin was called for a yellow card for a misplayed back pass. The card set up an indirect free kick for MIT just five yards from the goal line as the resulting shot by graduate student Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.) was blocked at point blank range by Rubin.

- MIT junior Rami Bikdash (Oak Ridge, N.C.) also had a great scoring opportunity that was cleared off the line by Eamon Keenan as it bounced around off the goalie.

- The score remained 1-0 until 19:29 remained in the second when Keenan tipped a shot past MIT junior Parth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.) after an outstanding long throw-in set up the chance. The Beavers extended the lead out to 3-0 just 43 seconds later as Arguello corralled his own rebound and converted the second chance for the score.

- Ben Cawood capped off the scoring for Babson with 8:46 remaining off an assist by Robert Dunne for the 4-0 advantage. MIT got themselves on the scoreboard with just under five minutes left as junior Adam Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) fed junior Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.) for his fifth goal of the year and the 4-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Desai finished the game with four stops for the Engineers, while Rubin turned aside eight shots for the Beavers.

- Shots were 16-15 in favor of MIT, along with a 3-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

- MIT is currently ranked No. 13 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll, while the Beavers were No. 23 in this week's poll.
