Men's Soccer Falls to Emerson in NEWMAC Semifinals in PKs

THE BASICS:

- Score: Emerson - 3, MIT - 3 (Emerson 4-3 PK)

- Records: MIT (8-8-1), Emerson (10-2-6)

- Location: Boston, Mass. (Rotch Field)

- The Lead: 110 minutes were not enough to decide who would play for the NEWMAC Tournament Championship as MIT and Emerson went to penalty kicks on Thursday night in the NEWMAC semifinals. The Lions pulled out the 4-3 win in PKs to advance to Saturday's Championship against Babson. Emerson held the second seed in the NEWMAC and MIT entered as the three-seed.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Emerson took the lead in the 30th minute on the fifth goal of the season from Thomas Chuaqui.

- Junior Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) put three-straight shots on goal in the 39th and 40th minutes, and it was the third one, off an Adam Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) pass that went into the back of the goal to tie the match at 39:48.

- The Lions took the lead back at 70:45 on a penalty kick goal from Gregory Kopanezos.

- With just under five minutes remaining, junior Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) tied the match with his goal at 85:16, and the teams headed into the first overtime period tied at two.

- Sophomore Jack Minor (Boca Raton, Fla.) gave MIT the lead at 95:06 when he took a pass from graduate student Kaleb Blake (Los Angeles, Calif.) and put it in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

- Three minutes into the second overtime, Emerson tied the match on a goal by Bo Feekins. Neither team found the back of the net in the remaining time to force the match into decisive penalty kicks.

- First-year Ethan Reich (New York, N.Y.) and senior Hendrik Mayer (Montville, N.J.) scored on the first two chances for MIT, and Emerson split its first two chances. The Engineers missed their third opportunity, and the Lions converted on their third and fourth chances to take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Joseph Gross (Miami, Fla.) tied it at 3-3, but Emerson made its fifth PK, and MIT did not convert on its final chance to give Emerson the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- This is the first meeting between the two teams in the NEWMAC Tournament.

- The Engineers held the advantage in shots (24-10) and shots on goal (14-7). MIT also held an 11-6 advantage in corner kicks.
