The Lead: First-year
Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) tossed a complete game no-hitter in game two as the MIT softball team swept Clark to improve to a perfect 6-0 in NEWMAC play. This is the second no-hitter in as many series for MIT as the Engineers have now tossed six no-hitters since 2018 and eight in program history. O'Connor becomes the sixth MIT pitcher to throw a no-hitter with three of the last four MIT no-hitters coming against Clark.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One
- First-year
Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead in the fourth with an RBI single to left, and first-year
Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) followed with another RBI single to make it a 2-0 lead. First-year
Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) then gave the Engineers a 4-0 lead as her two-out single plated two more runs.
- The Cougars cut the MIT lead in half with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but MIT responded by scoring three in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. Sophomore
Rylie Spiegel (Bradenton, Fla.) plated Bivin with a single while sophomore
Katia Pendowski's (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) two-out single scored two more Engineers.
- After allowing a two-out single, senior
Anya Chase (Wells, Maine) struck out
Samantha Crowley looking to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Pendowski led the way for MIT with three hits followed by Sell, Adkison, Cable, and Bivin with two hits each.
- Chase went seven innings allowing two runs while striking out 10 for her seventh win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two
- MIT grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a triple to center by Cable and then erupted for an eight-run fourth to take a 9-0 lead.
- Senior
Claire Wichman (Omaha, Neb.) put the game out of reach with a 2-run double in the fifth that gave MIT an 11-0 lead as O'Connor shut down the Cougars for the complete game no-hitter.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- O'Connor earned the win with her first collegiate no-hitter, as she struck out eight Clark batters in the game.
- Relihan, Cable, and junior
Haley Samuelsen (Houston, Texas) each registered two hits in the game for MIT.
