Softball Scores 22 Runs in Sweep of Smith

THE BASICS:

Game 1: MIT - 8, Smith- 0

- Records: MIT (22-11, 11-3 NEWMAC), Smith (10-19, 5-9 NEWMAC)

- Location: Northampton, Mass. (Softball Field)

- The Lead: The MIT softball team outscored Smith 22-1 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) went yard in both games while first-year Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) knocked in five runs on the day to extend the Engineers' winning streak to six.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One

- MIT jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first as sophomore Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) singled to center to plate two and Pendowski followed with a homer to left.
 
- Junior Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, Pa.) made it a 5-0 MIT lead with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Bivin made it a six-run game in the third with an RBI single to center.
 
- First-year Dana Bell (Bensalem, Pa.) plated sophomore Rylie Spiegel (Bradenton, Fla.) with an RBI groundout in the fourth, and Bivin made it an 8-0 game with an RBI single to right in the fifth as senior Anya Chase (Wells, Maine) retired Smith in order in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Chase earned her 10th win as she pitched five innings allowing just two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
 
- Bivin led the way with three hits while knocking in two. Relihan and Pendowski also finished the day with two RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two

- MIT scored in its first at-bats again plating two on a Bell sacrifice fly and a Pendowski single. Smith got on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.
 
- A three-run homer from Bivin highlighted a six-run third for MIT which saw sophomore Malia Smith (Boise, Idaho), Spiegel, and Sell also knocking in runs.
 
- Pendowski hit her second homer on the day in the fourth to put MIT up 9-1. The Engineers scored five times in the fifth off RBI hits from Spiegel, Bell, first-year Kristen Lee (Freehold, N.J.), and Smith to seal the 14-1 victory.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- With her homer, Pendowski now leads the NEWMAC with seven on the season and is just three shy of the MIT career mark. Her 31 RBI on the year is nine shy of the single-season record and currently ranks second in the conference.
 
- Ten different Engineers registered a hit in the game with Spiegel and Bivin leading the way with three each. Bivin led the team with three RBI in the game.
 
- Chase and first-year Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, Texas) combined to allow just three hits on the day while walking just two with five strikeouts.

- The Engineers return to the field on Wednesday, April 27 when they will host Simmons College in a doubleheader on Briggs Field beginning at 3 p.m.
