Sailing Finishes Third at Morris Trophy; Eighth at Women's Team Championship

The Lead: The MIT sailing team raced in three events during the weekend, highlighted by a third-place finish at the George Morris Trophy and an eighth-place finish at the Women's Team Racing National Championships.
 
GEORGE MORRIS TROPHY | Boston, Mass. | 3rd of 18 (121 points)
 
- The Engineers finished third overall, totaling 121 points with 59 in the A races and 62 points in the B races. MIT bested Rhode Island College by three points to earn the third-place finish as the team won the final race of the day.
 
- Overall the team had ten top-five finishes including five top-two finishes.   
 
84TH BOSTON DINGHY CLUB CHALLENGE CUP | Cambridge, Mass. | 9th of 15 (209 points)
 
-  MIT recorded 69 points in the A races, 64 points in the B races, and 76 in the C races for the ninth-place finish.
 
- The team won two races and earned eight top-five finishes.

WOMEN'S TEAM RACE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP | Providence, RI. | 8th of 12

- The Engineers went 5-6 in the round-robin races, earning wins over Stanford, Georgetown, Cornell, South Florida, and Michigan. MIT was one of 12 teams to qualify for the event as the Engineers finished one win shy of making the top-six, eventually finishing eighth on a tie-breaker.

- Senior Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), senior Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, N.Y.), and first-year Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) skippered the boat while first-year Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), senior Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa), first-year Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.), senior Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii), junior Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.), and first-year Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.) made up the crew.
