Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Elms, 3-0

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT - 3, Elms - 0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-17)
 
- Records: MIT (7-4), Elms (1-8)
 
- Location: Chicopee, Mass. (Maguire Center)
 
- The Lead: The MIT men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Elms in Friday night non-conference action to snap a three-match losing streak.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Set 1: With the set tied at three, MIT went on a 12-4 run punctuated by back-to-back kills from first-year Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) to take a 15-7 lead. An ace from senior Troy Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 13-point lead and a kill from junior Phillip Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) sealed the 25-10 set one win.
 
- Set 2: Kills from junior Nathan Levandoske (Harvey, La.) gave the Engineers a 6-3 lead in the second, but Elms pulled to within one with an attacking error. Back-to-back aces from sophomore Ben Sheres (San Diego, Calif.) then gave MIT a six-point advantage. Sheres gave the Engineers set point with another ace, and a kill from sophomore Nicolas Stone Perez (Coral Gables, Fla.) gave MIT a 25-16 set two win.
 
- Set 3: The teams stayed close in the third set until the Engineers used a 5-0 run to go up 15-7. MIT continued to build on its advantage, and a kill from Sheres gave the visitors the 25-17 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Sheres posted a career-high seven kills and Levandoske also contributed seven kills and six digs in the match.
 
- Stone Perez put up a career-best 15 assists in the match.
 
- The Engineers outhit Elms .367-.052.
 
- Rafa Artero led the home team with seven kills.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT is back on the court tomorrow as the Engineers will open up UVC play with a 12 p.m. match at fifth-ranked Vassar followed by a 2 p.m. non-conference match against Stevenson.
