Men's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Matches With Wins Over Vassar and Nichols

THE BASICS:
 
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble)
 
- Scores:
MIT - 7, Vassar - 2
MIT - 8, Nichols - 1

- Records: No. 30 MIT (3-2), Vassar (4-1), Nichols (1-4)
 
- The Lead: The No. 30 MIT men's tennis team decisively won both of its matches as the Engineers handed Vassar its first loss of the year by a 7-2 score and then defeated Nichols 8-1 to close out a 3-0 weekend of action in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. VASSAR
 
- Senior Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and junior Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) cruised to an 8-0 win in No. 1 doubles while an 8-5 win in No. 2 doubles by junior Sundeep Chakladar (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Wayne Nelms (Baltimore, Md.) gave MIT a 2-1 advantage after doubles.
 
- Kahler gave the Engineers a 3-1 advantage with a sweep in No. 2 singles and a sweep in No. 4 singles from sophomore Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) gave the home team a 4-1 advantage.
 
- The Brewers took a straight set win in No. 1 singles, but the Engineers continued to roll with senior Richter Jordaan (Denver, Colo.) earning a three-set win in No. 3 followed by a straight-set wins by Chakladar to seal the match for MIT.
 
- Senior Benji Grossman (Sands Point, N.Y.) wrapped up the match for the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win in six singles. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. NICHOLS
 
- The Engineers won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles action. Shen and Kahler took one doubles followed by Chakladar and Nelms with an 8-2 win in two doubles and an 8-6 win by junior Daniel Sharygin (Newburgh, Ind.) and sophomore Benjamin Ebanks (New York City, N.Y.).
 
- The top-three courts were all MIT wins with Jordaan, Grossman and Sharygin earning straight-set wins.
 
UP NEXT:

- The Engineers head out on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Sarasota Springs, N.Y. for a 4:00 p.m. contest against Skidmore on Friday, March 4.
