Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Vassar in UVC Semifinals

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: No. 1 Vassar - 3, No. 15 MIT – 0 (25-18, 25-19, 27-25)
 
- Records: MIT (16-14), Vassar (23-1)
 
- Location: Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (Kenyon Hall)
 
- The Lead: The No. 15 MIT men's volleyball team was defeated by host and nationally ranked number one Vassar, 3-0, in the semifinals of the United Volleyball Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
- Set 1: First year Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) got MIT to within one at 7-6, but Vassar then went on a 7-4 run to go up 14-10. Sophomore Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) made it a six-point Vassar lead with his kill however, the Brewers would not let MIT get any closer as they took set one, 25-18.
 
- Set 2: Senior Nick Gustafson (San Diego, Calif.) tied the set at 11, and the teams went back and forth before a 4-0 run from the hosts gave them an 18-14 lead. A service error cut the Vassar lead to 22-18 but they held on for the 25-19 win.
 
- Set 3:  Trailing 12-8, a kill from junior Max Turner (Chandler, Ariz.) started a 3-0 MIT run to get the Engineers to one at 12-11. Kills from senior Troy Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) and Gustafson cut the Vassar lead to one, and an attack error from the home team tied the set at 14. Vassar then began to pull away, as they built a 20-17 lead, but MIT did not go away as a kill from Oliveira got the Engineers to within one at 22-21. Back-to-back Brewer errors tied the match at 24. Oh gave MIT the lead, but Vassar scored the next three to win the set and advance to tomorrow's Championship.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
-  Oh led the Engineers with nine kills, followed by Oliveira with eight and Gustafson with six.
 
- Turner led MIT with 30 assists.
 
- Andrew Kim had a match-high 15 kills and Jacob Kim had 37 assists for the Brewers.

- Oliveira was named to the All-Tournament Team.
