Men's Soccer Opens 2023 Season With a 3-3 Draw Against Haverford

The Engineers had three different goal scorers in the season opener

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: The MIT men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 3-3 draw against Haverford College on the road on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just two minutes into the match, graduate student Peter Novoa (Omaha, Neb.) sent a pass to sophomore Raymond Wang (Weston, Mass.) for the first goal of the season for MIT at 2:16.
 
- The Fords converted on a penalty kick goal by Caleb Miller at 6:18 to tie the match.
 
- MIT pulled out to a 3-1 lead with goals from senior Aidan Hallinan (Carlsbad, Calif.) off a pass from senior Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) at 33:41, and Arun Kirk put in an unassisted goal at 52:04.
 
- Aidan Lacy set up Andrew Peebles for a goal just 40 seconds later to pull the Fords to within one.
 
- The hosts converted on their second penalty kick opportunity of the match as Alex Millones found the back of the net at 65:42 to tie the match.
 
- Sophomore Kai McClennen (Jackson, Wyo.) sent a shot wide of the goal at 88:46, and the Fords got the ball and went down the field in search of the winning goal, but the Thomas Vanni shot was turned away by senior Lukas Hanson-Puffer (London, England) at 89:14 to end the match in a 3-3 draw.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Fords held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
- Hanson-Puffer made four saves in net while his counterpart Dylan Ioffreda turned away two Engineer shots.
 
- The goal for Hallinan is the sixth in his career for the defender while the assist for Robinson gives him 30 career points.

- The Engineers will remain on the road as they head to Scranton for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, September 3.
