- The Lead: Led by a runner-up performance from sophomore
Katherine Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.), the No. 3 ranked MIT women's cross country team captured the 2023 Purple Valley Classic on Saturday afternoon with a total of 23 points. The Engineers defeated No. 16 Williams by a 14-point margin and placed four runners in the top six, en route to the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Sanderson crossed in second with a time of 22:32.8 for a per-mile time of 6:03 over the six-kilometer course. Senior
Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) was a second back in third at 22:33.8, followed by sophomore
Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) in fourth place at 22:34.1.

- Junior
Christina Crow (Mercer Island, Wash.) placed fifth overall and fourth for MIT with a time of 22:53.5 and first-year
Olivia Girand (New York, N.Y.) closed out the scoring runners in ninth at 23:09.8.

- First-year
Heather Jensen (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) ended the race in 11th place with a time of 23:17.7, along with first-year
Megan Diulus (Akron, Ohio) in 18th at 23:34.9.

- MIT returns to action on Saturday, October 7th as the Engineers head to the Pre-National Meet in Newville, Pa. The men's race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the women's race starting at Noon.
