Two Second Half Goals Gives Men's Soccer a 3-1 Road Win Over WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. –  The MIT men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to earn a key NEWMAC road victory as MIT defeated WPI 3-1 on Wednesday night on H. Carr Field.
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Graduate student Adam Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) sent a through ball to sophomore Dilin Meloni (Needham, Mass.) who settled the ball and put a shot into the back of the net at 13:50.
  • WPI tied the match at 40:15 when first year Mike Montabana (Jamison, Pa.) headed in a pass from junior Anthony Coutts (Millis, Mass.).
  • MIT regained the lead in the second half when junior Kaleb Asfaw (San Jose, Calif.) collected an attempted WPI clear in traffic and scored his first goal of the season in the 66th minute.
  • Senior Jack Minor (Boca Raton, Fla.) added an insurance goal as he tucked the pass from sophomore Garrett Dyson (South Orange, N.J.) just under the crossbar at 77:16 to make it 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Minor tallied his career-best third goal of the season. Meloni scored his second while Asfaw got his first of the year.
  • Sophomore Hernando Ardila (Miramar, Fla.) turned away a season-best six shots to improve to 5-4.
  • Freshman Savio Ketnouvong (Paxton, Mass.) made two stops for WPI.
  • The hosts held a 14-11 advantage in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. They also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • MIT earned its first win over WPI since a 2-0 win in 2016.

  • MIT wraps up the regular season on Saturday, November 2 with a 2:00 PM road contest at Wheaton.
