The Lead: For the second day in a row, junior
Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) stood atop the awards podium as she won the shot put at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday. She became the first student-athlete in the history of the MIT men's and women's track and field programs to win multiple events at the same NCAA Championship meet. Sophomore
Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) claimed fifth place in the mile, helping the Engineers finish fifth overall out of 66 scoring teams.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- On her second attempt of the day, Boykin generated what proved to be the winning throw which reached 14.79m (48' 6.25"). This was the third national championship in her career as she won the program's first weight throw title on Friday and was the hammer throw champion at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
- Fernandez earned her first individual All-America accolade as she finished fifth in the mile with a time of 4:54.24. She was also a member of MIT's distance medley relay team that claimed fourth place on Friday.
- A first-time qualifier, sophomore
Nony Otu Ugwu (Katy, Texas) placed 14
th in the triple jump as she recorded a distance of 11.71m (38' 5") on her third attempt. The performance resulted in All-America Second Team honors.
- In her debut at the indoor championship,
Emily Ball (Des Moines, Iowa) ranked 19
th in the shot put with a mark of 12.14m (39' 10").
NOTES:
- Boykin joins
Cimran Virdi '16 and
Uzoma Orji '06 as the only student-athletes in MIT track and field history to win multiple national championships. Virdi was the women's pole vault winner four times (indoor – 2014, 2015, 2016; outdoor – 2015) while Orji was a four-time champion as a member of the men's team (indoor shot put – 2004, 2006; indoor weight throw – 2005; outdoor shot put – 2006).
- MIT's fifth-place finish as a team was its best showing since it tied for fifth place in 2017. The Engineers' highest ranking was third place in 2011.
