No. 11 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 10 Middlebury, 5-2, in NCAA Regional Final

- The Lead: The No. 11 MIT women's tennis team fell to No. 10 Middlebury College, 5-2, in the regional final of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Sunday. This was the second postseason meeting between both teams and the first since the second round of 2013 NCAA Tournament, which the Panthers won, 5-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
- Middlebury built a 2-0 lead after victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Claudia Miller and Gena Huang defeated senior Kimberly Liao (Commack, N.Y.) and first-year Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.), 8-0, while Nathalie van der Reis and Lulu Wu battled junior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) for an 8-6 win. In the top spot, sophomores Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Calif.) outlasted Sahana Raman and Amy Delman, 8-7 (7-5).
 
- The Panthers increased their advantage to 3-1 after van der Reis topped Samets, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles slot. First-year Katya Shepherd Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) picked up MIT's next point as she defeated Raman, 6-2, 6-3, at the top of the lineup. However, Middlebury captured the match by winning in the No. 2 and No. 4 positions as Wu defeated Liao, 6-0, 6-3, and Huang battled Kolli for a 7-6, 6-1 victory.
 
UNFINISHED MATCHES:
 
- In the No. 3 position, Miller won the first set, 6-3, but Lu had a 5-3 lead in the second set.
 
- In the No. 5 position, Delman won the first set, 6-3, but Deshpande had a 5-3 advantage in the second set.
 
UP NEXT:
 
- MIT will wrap up the season at the NCAA Singles/Doubles Championships on May 25-27 as Shepherd Johnson earned a berth in the singles tournament. The competition will be held in St. Louis, Missouri at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center with Washington University (Mo.) serving as the host.
