Softball Walks-Off Babson in Extras to Advance to NEWMAC Championship

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 2, Babson - 1 (8 Innings)

- Records: MIT (27-12), Babson (26-17)

- Location: Babson Park, Mass. (Alumni Field)

- The Lead: It took extra innings to decide a winner, but the MIT softball team came away with a thrilling 2-1 win to advance to the Championship Bracket of the NEWMAC Tournament. The No. 3 Engineers handed No. 4 Babson its first loss of the tournament as the Beavers will play WPI in an elimination game on Saturday at Briggs Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- First-year Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) led off the second with a walk, and junior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) laid down a bunt to advance her to second. Kumar then scored the first run of the game on a single to right-center off the bat of sophomore Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.).

- The Beavers tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI groundout to second base.

- Babson got a leadoff triple from Emily Walsh in the sixth, but she was thrown out at home by first-year Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) to complete an inning-ending double play and keep the game tied at one.

- Adkison led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right, but she was left stranded as the teams headed to extra innings.

- The Beavers loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but on a fly ball to right, MIT executed a perfect run down to tag out Sara Moore and end the inning.

- Johnston singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, and junior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) and Kumar followed with walks to load the bases for the Engineers. Adkison hit a ball to the Babson shortstop who bobbled the ball and allowed Johnston to cross the plate with the winning run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) went all eight and allowed just one run on eight hits to earn her 18th win. Moira O'Reilly fell to 16-8 with 7.2 innings of work for Babson. She gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

- Junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.), Johnston, Adkison, and Scarpaci had the hits for MIT in the game. Bivin and Kumar worked two walks each.
