Men's Soccer Blanks Roger Williams, 2-0

BRISTOL, RI – The MIT men's soccer team scored in each half to secure its second-straight road win as the Engineers defeated Roger Williams, 2-0, on Wednesday night.
 
THE BASICS
  • Score: MIT 2, Roger Williams 0
  • Records: MIT (4-1-0 Overall), Roger Williams (3-1-1 Overall)
  
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • After a Roger Williams penalty, first year Shikhar Motupally (Avon, Conn.) converted on the penalty kick goal to put MIT up 1-0 at 28:28.
  • The Engineers strung together passes in front of the goal where sophomore Dilin Meloni (Needham, Mass.) found first year Jonah Gurion (Rye N.Y.) for the score at 71:22.
  • Late in the game the Hawks earned two corner kicks but could not convert on either. Senior Jason Sailey (Durham, Conn.) saw his shot blocked by the MIT defense which posted its second shutout of the season.
  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Gurion has recorded a goal in back-to-back games and is tied with Motupally for second on the team with three goals this season.
  • Sophomore Paolo Mangiafico (Farmington, Conn.) recorded his second win as he made two saves in the contest. Senior Hogan Cain (Nottingham, N.H.) made one save in net and fell to 3-1.
  • Roger Williams had a 13-6 advantage in shots with the Engineers holding a slight 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

UP NEXT: 
  • The Engineers are back on the field on Saturday, September 14 when they welcome UMass Boston to Roberts Field for a 4:00 PM contest.
