No. 17 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Drew, 3-0

DALLAS, Pa. - The No. 17 MIT men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven as the Engineers opened the Cougar Kickoff Classic with a 3-0 victory over Drew on Friday night.  

THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 3, Drew 0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15) 
  • Records: MIT (7-0 Overall), Drew (0-8 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Set 1: A kill and block from junior Michael Rini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) gave MIT an early 11-4 advantage. Three straight points from Drew cut the MIT lead to six at 21-15, but the Engineers scored four of the next six points, including two more kills from Rini to take the opening set 25-17.  
  • Set 2: A 4-0 run put the Engineers in front 11-5. Rini totaled two more kills in the run which also saw kills from sophomore Ryan Espinoza (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Riley Oh (Irvine, Calif.). MIT continued to build on its lead as a 5-0 run gave MIT a 24-12 lead a kill from Grant Oh secured a 25-13 set two win.  
  • Set 3: The Engineers used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 12-3. Drew responded with a 4-1 run to make it a 13-7 set. That's as close as they would get as a kill from first-year Canis Li (San Jose, Calif.) sealed the 25-15 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:  

  • Grant Oh led the way with a match high 17 kills. Rini finished with six followed by Riley Oh with four. 
  • Riley Oh collected 27 assists with sophomore Jensen Fiskin (Palm Desert, Calif.) contributing four.  
  • Junior Kevin Windisch (Placentia, Calif.) finished with two assists and seven digs. 
  • First-year Hansen Fan (Center Valley, Pa.) and first-year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsbad, Calif.) contributed three blocks each.  

UP NEXT:  

  • MIT is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, February 1 with two top-20 matchups. The Engineers will open play at the Cougar Kickoff with a 1:00 PM match against No. 12 Messiah, followed by a 3:00 PM match against No. 20 Misericordia.
