Brown Tops Water Polo 18-12 in NWPC Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The MIT water polo team saw a late rally fall short against Brown as the Bears defeated the Engineers 18-12 on Saturday morning at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Brown 18, MIT 12 
  • Records: MIT (5-11, 1-3 NWPC), Brown (11-4, 2-2 NWPC)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Derek Schaffer gave MIT a 2-1 lead at 5:43 in the first, but the Bears used a 5-1 run to build a 6-3 lead at 7:01 in the second. 
  • A six-on-five goal from Adam Ivatorov at 5:30 cut the Bears' lead to two, however Brown scored the next four goals to build a 10-4 advantage. Caspar Lightner scored with three seconds remaining in the half to send MIT into the break trailing by five. 
  • Goals from Kunal Rajadhyax and Rick Lundh in the third cut the Brown lead to 13-7, but the Bears got a goal from William Griswold to take a seven-goal advantage. MIT tallied two of the quarter's final three goals with Jackson Kay scoring his first of the game to make it 14-8 and Lightner scoring with 35 seconds left to send MIT into the final quarter trailing 15-9. 
  • Kay scored at 5:40 in the fourth, but Brown tallied the next two goals. Back-to-back goals from Ivatorov and William Ewald made it 17-12, and Brown tacked on a final goal to account for the 18-12 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Lightner led the way with his 10th hat trick of the season. Ivatorov, Kay, and Lundh all had two goals. Lightner has a team-high 45 goals while Ivatorov has 41. Lundh got his 33rd goal of the season while Kay netted his ninth. 
  • Ivatorov, Lundh, Ewald, and Joshua Woren all had two steals. Lundh also had a team-high three assists while Rajadhyax had two. 
  • Woren made four stops in cage with Armaan Gill making five.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT is back in the pool tomorrow, Sunday, October 12 for a 12:00 PM match at Harvard. The Bears play Harvard later Saturday at 6:00 PM.
