Men's Water Polo

Water Polo Slips By LIU, 16-11

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The MIT water polo team snapped its five-game skid with a 16-11 road win over LIU on Sunday morning.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 16, LIU 11 
  • Records: MIT (5-10, 1-2 NWPC), LIU (2-13, 0-4 NWPC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Sharks struck first with a penalty shot goal before goals from Rick Lundh and Caspar Lightner gave MIT the lead. LIU tied the match at 4:15 but the Engineers rattled off four consecutive goals to take a 6-2 lead after one.  
  • The teams exchanged goals in the second quarter with the teams going to half with the Engineers holding a 9-5 advantage.  
  • The third quarter saw the same back-and-forth play before the Engineers scored the last two goals of the quarter. Lundh and Adam Ivatorov accounted for the three MIT goals as they went into the final quarter of play holding on to a 12-7 lead. 
  • After Lightner gave MIT a 15-9 lead at 3:34, LIU scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to four. A goal from Kunal Rajadhyax with 32 seconds left sealed the 16-11 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Lundh led the way with five goals followed by Lightner with four. Lightner leads the team with 42 goals this season. 
  • Derek Schaffer paced the Engineers with four assists followed by Rajadhyax with three.  
  • Armaan Gill made nine saves in net.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers remain in conference play as they will head to Brown for a 10:00 AM contest on Saturday, October 11. The Sharks will play Iona on Sunday, October 12 at 4:00 PM.
