Late Spurt Gives No. 14 Princeton a 17-7 Win Over Water Polo in NWPC Conference Semifinals

Providence, RI. – The MIT water polo team, seeded fifth in the tournament fell to top-seed and No. 14 nationally ranked Princeton, 17-7 in the semifinals of the NWPC Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Catherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center at Brown University. 

 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: No. 14 Princeton 17, MIT 7 
  • Records: MIT (8-19 Overall) Princeton (22-9 Overall)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Princeton raced out to a 5-2 lead after one with MIT getting goals from Rick Lundh and William Ewald
  • After the Tigers built a 7-2 advantage, the Engineers began to chip away at lead. Ewald and Victor Perez scored to cut the deficit to three at 7-4 and back-to-back goals from Lundh and Caspar Lightner got MIT to two scores at 8-6. 
  • Two Princeton goals got the advantage back up to four and after a Lightner goal made it 10-7, the Tigers closed the game on a 7-0 run to earn the 17-7 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Lightner, Lundh, and Ewald all finished with two goals in the contest. Lightner now leads the Engineers with 70 goals while Lundh has 51 and Ewald has 20.  
  • Derek Schaffer dished out two assists as he has a team-high 53 this season. Lundh also had two assists on the year to bring his season total to 31. 
  • Joshua Woren had two steals and made six saves on the day. Armaan Gill made five saves in the match.  
  • Adam Ivatorov earned eight exclusions in the match.

  • MIT will face Brown in the third-place game tomorrow, Sunday, November 23 at 10:00 AM.
