Ivatorov Breaks Goals Record; Water Polo Falls to No. 14 Princeton, 19-10

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Adam Ivatorov became the program record holder in career goals scored as the MIT water polo team concluded its regular season with a tough 19-10 loss at home to No. 14 Princeton on Sunday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Princeton 19, MIT 10 
  • Records: MIT (7-18 Overall, 3-7 NWPC), Princeton (21-9, 9-1)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Derek Schaffer got the Engineers on the board early and after a Princeton goal tied the match, Ivatorov tied the program record in goals with his score at 5:01. The Tigers then went on a 5-0 run before a 6-on-5 goal from Nick Soule stopped the run and cut the Princeton lead to 6-3 after one. 
  • The visitors outscored the host 5-0 in the second to take an 11-3 lead into the halftime break. 
  • Ivatorov set the new program mark in goals scored as his shot at 7:10 found the back of the cage to make it 11-4 Princeton. He completed the hattrick with a 6-on-5 goal that made it a 12-5 contest.  
  • Princeton scored three straight to take a 15-5 lead. Kunal Rajadhyax set up Andras Beleznay for a 6-on-5 goal that cut the Princeton lead to 15-6. Rajadhyax found the back of the net with 52 seconds left to send the Engineers into the final quarter trailing 15-7. 
  • The Tigers continued to hold off MIT in the final quarter. Soule stopped a 2-0 Tigers run and a goal from Beleznay cut the Princeton lead to 18-9. Beleznay concluded the scoring with his third goal with 16 seconds left to account for the 19-10 score.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Ivatorov and Beleznay finished the day with three goals each. Ivatorov  is tied for the team lead with 64 goals this season while Beleznay has 21.  
  • Soule finished with two goals, two assists, and two steals.  
  • Schaffer and Rajadhyax also had two steals in the contest.  
  • Joshua Woren made three saves in goal and Armaan Gill made five stops.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will play in the 4/5 game at the NWPC Tournament on Friday, November 21 at Brown. The match will begin at 5:00 PM.
