POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y - The No. 20 MIT men's volleyball team fell in three tightly contested sets to No. 3 and undefeated Vassar in a road UVC contest on Friday night.

  • Records: No. 20 MIT (9-6 Overall, 0-2 UVC), No. 3 Vassar (12-0 Overall, 1-0 UVC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Set 1: The Engineers raced out to a 6-1 advantage, but the Brewers stuck around and eventually pulled even at 16 on a kill from senior Gavin Akoto (Justice, Ill.). Senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) put MIT up 20-18 with a kill, but Vassar scored seven of the next three points to win the set 25-23.
  • Set 2: Vassar held onto the lead early in the set before a kill from sophomore Ryan Espinoza (Los Angeles, Calif.) and an attacking error tied the match at 16. The Engineers used a 3-0 run to gain a 21-19 lead, but Vassar tied the match at 23. The teams continued to go back-and-forth and a kill from Oh would tie the match at 31, but Vassar was able to close it out, scoring the next two points for the 33-31 win.
  • Set 3: With the set tied at 14, the Brewers scored three-straight to take a 17-14 lead, and they would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the set. Back-to-back kills from Oh made it a 23-20 match but Vassar held on for the 25-21 win.
