No. 20 Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 16 Lasell in Five Set Match

NEWTON, Mass. - The No. 20 MIT men's volleyball team dropped a tough five-set road match to No. 16 Lasell on Wednesday night. This was the third-straight top 20 matchup, and second straight five set match for the Engineers who fall to 7-3 on the season while Lasell improves to 10-1.

MIT had three players record at least 10 kills in the match.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lasell 3, MIT 2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13)
  • Records: MIT (7-3 Overall), No. 16 Lasell (10-1 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Set 1: A kill from first year Kristof Spellen (New Rochelle, N.Y.) gave the Engineers a 7-3 advantage, but the Lasers used a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. MIT pulled even at 14-14 and 15-all, but Lasell did not relinquish the lead and took set one, 25-21.
  • Set 2: After trailing for the majority of the set, MIT used a 7-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. Lasell responded with a 4-2 run to make it 22-all. Kills from Spellen and senior Grant Oh (Irvine, Calif.) gave the Engineers set point, but junior Jasper Schultz (Winchester, Mass.) tied the match at 24. MIT took advantage of back-to-back errors from Lasell to win set two, 26-24.
  • Set 3: The hosts raced out to a 14-6 lead. MIT chipped away at the deficit and a kill from first-year Maddox Brandenburg (Carlsbad, Calif.) made it a three-point set at 24-21, but Teddy Teraszkiewicz (Newtown, Conn.) gave Lasell the set win with a kill.
  • Set 4: Grant Oh gave MIT a 15-9 advantage and the Engineers did not let up. Back-to-back points from Spellen gave MIT a 23-16 lead with two-straight attacking errors from Lasell giving the Engineers the 25-17 win.
  • Set 5: The Lasers went up 11-7 before a Spellen kill and attack error by the home team got MIT to within two. The teams then traded 2-0 spurts, and back-to-back kills from Grant Oh cut the Lasell lead to 14-13, but the home team held on for the win.
