Softball Hits Five Homers to Power Past Stevens in Doubleheader Sweep

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. - The MIT softball team got five home runs from five players as the Engineers powered past Stevens, sweeping the road non-conference doubleheader on Monday evening at Weehawken Waterfront Park.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Scores: 
    • Game 1: MIT 16, Stevens 2 (5 innings) 
    • Game 2: MIT 9, Stevens 2 
  • Records: MIT (8-2 Overall), Stevens (7-13 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE: 

  • MIT put up five runs with two outs in the first inning. Senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) singled home the first two runs of the day. Junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) followed, taking a 3-2 pitch over the wall to plate three more runs for the Engineers.  
  • A throwing error by the Ducks plated the sixth Engineer run of the day in the second. 
  • Ladd singled home her fourth run of the day to make it a 7-0 game. Cable and Ladd  executed a double steal that saw Cable record the eighth run of the day. First year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) singled home Ladd, and a two-run double from sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) extended the MIT lead to 11-0 after three. 
  • Stevens got two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single from Jessica Hsu (Torrance, Calif.) but senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) got back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.  
  • MIT recorded its third five-run inning in the fifth. A single from senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) and a fielding error plated three, and senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) took the first pitch she saw over the wall to make it a 16-2 game.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • All nine Engineers reached base in the game as the Engineers recorded their third-straight game scoring at least 10 runs. 
  • Katsuyama moves to 2-1 with three innings of three-hit ball. She allowed two runs and four walks and struck out three. Junior Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) threw the final two innings allowing just one hit with three Ks. 
  • Johnston, Bivin, Adkison, Cable, and Ladd all had two hits in the game as MIT put up 13 total hits.  
  • Ladd knocked in a career-high four runs. Johnston, Adkison, and Cable all plated two runs.  


HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO: 

  • Stevens loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, but junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got a popout to second and, after falling behind Elizabeth Kirstein (Woodinville, Wash.) 3-1, Langmeyer got the count even and got Kirstein looking to end the inning.  
  • Feng hit the third homer of the day for MIT as her three-run shot in the second gave the Engineers the 3-0 lead.  
  • An RBI double from Carmelita Murphy-Brown (British Columbia, Canada) got the Ducks on the board in the third. 
  • Bivin hit the fourth homer of the day to score three and put the Engineers up 6-1. Feng doubled home two more runs in the inning, and Cable scored the eighth run of the night on an RBI groundout from first year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.).  
  • Cable gave the Engineers a 9-1 lead with MIT's fifth long-ball of the doubleheader.  
  • Langmeyer struck out three in the sixth as she collected six Ks in her final three innings of work.
  • Hsu got the Ducks their second run of the day with an RBI groundout in the seventh.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The three homers in the game tie a program record. Overall, the Engineers have hit 12 balls over the wall this season, four away from the record for most in a season.  
  • Cable's home run is the seventh of her career to put her fifth all-time. Cable finished the day 2-3 with an RBI. She now has 90 RBI in her career to rank fourth.  
  • Adkison, Bivin, and Feng also collected two hits. Feng tied her career-high with four RBI while Bivin knocked in three. Adkison currently ranks second all-time in career hits with 172.  
  • Langmeyer (2-1) went six innings allowing one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts. During their four-game winning streak, MIT has outscored its opponents 50-11. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will open NEWMAC play on Saturday, March 29 with a doubleheader at WPI. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM. The Ducks will head to Drew University on Wednesday, March 26 with game one scheduled for 3:00 PM.
