No. 16 Women’s Tennis Sweeps Springfield, 7-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT women's tennis team won all nine matches in a 7-0 victory over Springfield College in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday afternoon at the DuPont Tennis Courts.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 16 MIT 7, Springfield 0
  • Records: No. 16 MIT (11-2 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC); Springfield (8-4 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • In the No. 3 position, junior Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and first-year Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) defeated first-year Ava Shea (Belchertown, Mass.) and junior Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.), 6-1.
  • Sophomores Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) captured the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over junior Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) and sophomore Natalia Peyon (Hong Kong) in the No. 2 slot.
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) completed the sweep with a 6-1 win against senior Ramida Manataweewat (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Jomkwan Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand).
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Sophomore Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) defeated McGoldrick, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot.
  • Shea inched out to a 3-2 lead in the opening set at No. 6 singles, but sophomore Sophia Min (Naples, Fla.) won the next four games. After trading games to start the second set, Min claimed the final five to secure the 6-3, 6-1 victory.
  • Zeng posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vettayawaikoon at the top of the ladder, clinching the match.
  • At the No. 2 slot, the first set was a back-and-forth battle as Manataweewat forced a tiebreaker with Lu. In the tiebreaker, Lu won the first six points en route to a 7-1 result. Lu carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before going on to record a 6-1 victory.
  • Tied at 3-3 in the first set at No. 5 singles, Petrie rattled off three wins in a row against Peyon. In the second set, Petrie picked up the first three games as she went on to defeat Peyon, 6-1.
  • First-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Elliott in the No. 3 slot.
