Softball Allows Just One Hit in Doubleheader Sweep of Salve Regina

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT softball team combined to allow just one hit in a doubleheader sweep of Salve Regina on Friday afternoon at Briggs Field. Junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) earned the one-hit win in game one while junior Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and first year Sarah Blackett (St. Petersburg, Fla.) combined for a five-inning no-hitter in game two.

THE BASICS:

  • Scores:
    • Game 1: MIT 3, Salve Regina 1
    • Game 2: MIT 9, Salve Regina 0
  • Records: MIT (16-8 Overall, 7-3 NEWMAC), Salve Regina (9-18 Overall, 4-7 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:

  • Salve got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the third. A double by Morganti Bello (Corte Madera, Calif.) with one out in the inning would be the last hit surrendered by Langmeyer in the game.
  • The Engineers tied the game in the bottom of the inning as first year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) came around to score on an RBI groundout by junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas).
  • Back-to-back singles by Thiessen and senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Calif.) put runners on the corners for the Engineers in the fifth. Salve was able to get Thiessen out at third attempting to tag up on a fly ball by senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.), but Ladd singled home Cable to give MIT the lead. Senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) singled home Ladd to put the Engineers up 3-1.
  • Langmeyer retired the Seahawks in order in the seventh to close the 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Langmeyer tossed her seventh complete game to move to 8-2 on the year. She walked two and struck out three.
  • Cable and Ladd each collected two hits in the game as MIT totaled 10 hits in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:

  • Bivin plated two runs with a double to center in the first. Kumar then singled her home to put MIT up 3-0.
  • Salve loaded the bases in the second with one out, but Blackett came in and got the final two outs to keep the Seahawks off the board.
  • MIT put the game out of reach in the third as Ladd got the offense going with a one-out triple to right. Three-straight RBI singles from junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) and first year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) made it a 7-0 lead and Johnston crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.
  • Ladd scored the ninth run for MIT on an error in the fourth and after a one out walk, Blackett got the final two outs to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Blackett earned her second win as she threw 3.2 innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Doering went the first 1.1 innings with three walks and one K.
  • Ladd, Kumar, and Johnston each had two hits in the game.
  • Bivin collected two RBI to bring her season total to 21 and her career total to 138. Kumar now has 16 on the year.
