Men's Tennis Earns 6-1 Win Over Springfield

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in NEWMAC play with a 6-1 win over Springfield on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 6, Springfield 1 
  • Records: MIT (5-4 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC), Springfield (9-2 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • MIT swept doubles play to take 1-0 lead into singles action. Sophomore Grant Gallagher (Irvine, Calif.) and first year SangHyuk Im (Irvine, Calif.) took a 6-0 win in No. 1 doubles followed by a 6-3 win in No. 2 doubles by senior Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) and sophomore Shrish Choudhary (Fremont, Calif.).  Graduate student Joseph Li (Naperville, Ill.) and first year Youngwoo Tahk (Sunnyvale, Calif.) won No. 3 doubles 7-6. 
  • Sophomore Siddharth Marathe (Pune, India) opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles. Junior Nicholas Liu (San Diego, Calif.) made it 3-0 MIT with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in five singles. 
  • Graduate student Tim Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) earned a 6-0, 6-3 win in three singles with graduate student Kailas Kahler (Pawtucket, R.I.) sealing the match for the Engineers with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the top singles court.  
  • Junior Jeremy Yu (Coppell, Texas) grabbed the last win of the day for MIT in No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT is back on the court on Saturday, April 5 for a pivotal NEWMAC contest at No. 11 Babson at 2:30 PM. The Pride travel to Wheaton on Friday, April 4 for a 3:30 PM match.
