BOSTON, Mass. - The MIT softball team earned its 20th win of the season as the Engineers swept Emerson on the road on Friday afternoon, led by senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.), who finished the doubleheader with six hits, including three doubles in game two to break the program record for doubles in a career.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:

  • Senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) helped MIT get out to an early 2-0 lead as her bunt single plated first year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.). Cable then stole home to make it 2-0.
  • Bivin singled to lead off the second and came around to score on a single from first year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.). Junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) hit a sac fly to right to plate senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) with the fourth Engineer run of the day.
  • Emerson put runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) induced two fly outs to end the inning.
  • The Lions once again got two runners on in the fifth, but Langmeyer got out of the inning.
  • First year Amanda Huang (Redmond, Wash.) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Thiessen hit a two-run inside the park homer to put MIT up by seven.
  • After a lead-off double and a walk put two runners on with one out, Cable caught a line drive down the line and stepped on first to convert the doubleplay and end the inning.
  • Junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a groundout by sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.). Bivin followed with a walk and later scored on a single by sophomore Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) to put MIT up nine.
  • Langmeyer worked around a two-out walk in the seventh to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Thiesssen's homer was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Langmeyer earned her 11th win, going all seven for her eighth complete game and second shutout of the season. She scattered six hits with four walks and seven Ks.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:

  • Bivin recorded her first double of the game with two outs in the second and came around to score on a single from Kumar. The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.
  • Another two-out double for Bivin put her in scoring position for Kumar who laced a triple to center to put MIT back in front. First year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) followed with a single to give the Engineers a two-run cushion.
  • With runners on first and second and one out in the fifth, Cable was able to double off the Emerson runner on first to end the inning.
  • In the sixth, Bivin got her third hit, this one a single down the leftfield line and came around to score on a Kumar double to right to make it 4-1.
  • Ladd led off the seventh with a double and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Adkison. Bivin then hit her third double of the game to plate Scarpaci and give the Engineers a five-run advantage.
