No. 16 Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Clark, 7-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT women's tennis team remained undefeated in NEWMAC play following a 7-0 victory over Clark University on Saturday in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.

HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • In the top spot, juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) cruised to a 6-0 victory over junior Merielle Kane (Vienna, Maine) and first-year Larkin Gardinier (Medford, Mass.).
  • Sophomores Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) and Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) followed with a 6-1 win against sophomores Winifred Gakidis (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Olivia Shipley (Winchendon, Mass.), capturing the doubles point in the No. 2 position.
  • Sophomore Alicen Liu (Novi, Mich.) and first-year Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) completed the sweep courtesy of a 6-2 decision versus sophomore Vavara Maltseva (Tres Cantos, Mass.) and first-year Amanda Keith (Brookfield, Conn.).
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) topped Gakidis, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 1 slot.
  • Samets recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Maltseva in the No. 3 position.
  • Deshpande clinched the match by defeating Shipley, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot.
  • Sun notched a 6-0, 6-1 win against Kane in the No. 4 slot.
  • Liu produced a 6-0, 6-0 victory over first-year Elena Zhakov (Maastricht), in the No. 5 position.
  • First-year Anselma Petrie (Eastchester, N.Y.) wrapped up the match by defeating senior Emma Allen (West Boylston, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0.
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 12 against NEWMAC foes. MIT will host No. 12 Wellesley College at 12:00 PM while Clark will travel to Springfield College for an 11:00 AM match.
