No. 8 Women’s Tennis Defeats Smith, 4-0, in NEWMAC Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 8 MIT defeated No. 4 seed Smith College, 4-0, in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon at the DuPont Tennis Courts. The Engineers secured a spot in the title match for the 12th consecutive season and will face No. 3 seed Babson College.

HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Juniors Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) defeated sophomore Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, Texas), 6-1, in the top spot.
  • Sophomores Saina Deshpande (Pune, India) and Anastasia Samets (Ocean, N.J.) claimed the doubles point by defeating first-year Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) and sophomore Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China) in the No. 3 position.
  • Senior Jay Lu (Austin, Texas) and first-year Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas) completed the sweep with a 6-3 result against seniors Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) in the No. 2 position.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • At the top of the ladder, first-year Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) rallied from a 4-3 deficit to win the first set, 6-4, against Hauser before going on to win the second set, 6-1.
  • In the No. 3 spot, Lu won three straight games to go up 4-2 en route to a 6-3 first-set victory versus Sauber. Lu then jumped out to a 4-0 advantage as she went on to post another 6-3 win.
  • Samets battled Wang for a 6-4 victory in the first set at No. 6 singles. In the second set, Samets built a 4-1 lead before clinching the match with a 6-2 score.
  • Zeng led Simunyola, 6-3, 3-2 in the No. 2 position.
  • Deshpande had a 6-4, 5-2 score versus Clara Clara Goshgarian in the No. 4 slot.
  • In the No. 5 spot, Lili Goshgarian won the first set, 7-5, against Kolli. However, Kolli held a 5-2 advantage in the second set when the match was halted.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will host nationally ranked No. 15 Babson in the NEWMAC Championship on Sunday, May 4 at 12:00 PM. This will be the fifth consecutive meeting between both teams in the title match.
