Softball Walks-Off Babson, 2-1, to Advance to the Championship Bracket of the NEWMAC Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - With the score tied at one in the bottom of the seventh with two on with two outs, first year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) took a pitch from Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) into centerfield to give the No. 1 seed MIT softball team a 2-1 walk-off win over No. 2 seed Babson in the second round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon on Briggs Field. The Engineers advance to the winner's bracket for the fifth-straight season with the win.

THE BASICS:

  • Records: MIT (27-10 Overall), Babson (25-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Feng walked to lead off the third and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Classmate Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) followed with a single to left to give MIT a 1-0 lead.
  • Babson tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.). They then looked to take the lead in the fifth on a ball off the bat of Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.), but senior Kennedy Adkison (San Jose, Calif.) threw out DeLong at first to end the inning and keep the game tied.
  • The Beavers loaded the bases in the sixth, but junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got out of the jam and left the bases loaded.
  • Sophomore Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) reached on a one out error and then went to second on an Adkison groundout. First-year Amanda Huang (Redmond, Wash.) then pinch ran for Kumar and made it to third on another Babson error. Feng then stepped up and took a two-strike pitch into center field to give the Engineers the 2-1 walk-off win.
