No. 17 Men's Volleyball Bests Emmanuel in Three Sets

BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 17 MIT men's volleyball team defeated Emmanuel, 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Jean Yawkey Center to improve to 4-0 on the year. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Emmanuel 0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19) 
  • Records: MIT 4-0 Overall, Emmanuel 1-4 Overall  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: A kill from Michael Rini gave MIT an 8-2 lead, but the Saints scored the next three to pull to within three. An 8-1 Engineer run, capped by an ace from Nathaniel Black put MIT up by 10. The Saints chipped away as a kill from Trey Guest cut the Engineer lead to 18-11, but a 4-0 run punctuated by a Rini kill gave MIT the set one win, 25-15.  
  • Set 2: MIT jumped out to a 6-2 advantage, but the host hung around and eventually put together a 3-0 run to pull ahead 15-14. MIT used a 5-0 run with a kill from Jensen Fiskin capping the run and giving the Engineers a 20-16 lead. Emmanuel could not regain the lead as an Alexander Garrett kill gave MIT the 25-22 win. 
  • Set 3: The teams remained close in the early portions of the set before MIT used a 5-1 to go up 11-6. The Saints quickly responded with a 4-1 run to cut the Engineer lead to 12-10. A kill from Garrett put MIT up 16-10 and the Engineers were able to hold the Saints off and secure a 25-19 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Garrett led the way with nine kills followed by Nate Toth with eight and Fiskin with five.  
  • Toth also led the way with eight digs while Kevin Windisch had seven. 
  • Fisken also collected three digs and six assists. 
  • Maddox Brandenburg and Matthew Louis had three blocks each while Rini finished with two.  
  • Colin Zimmerman handed out 25 assists.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, February 28 when they head to Rivier for a 6:00 PM match.
