Men's Soccer Head Coach Ken Bovell Set to Retire

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After leading the MIT men's soccer program since 2015, head coach Ken Bovell has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2026.

"Serving as the head coach of this program has been one of the great privileges of my professional life," said Bovell. "Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with extraordinary student-athletes, dedicated colleagues, and a supportive alumni community. This has meant more to me than I can adequately express."

Bovell, a two-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2021, finishes his coaching career with the Engineers with a record of 84-68-28. His most successful season came in 2015 when the team broke 11 team records while advancing to the NCAA Third Round.

"For over a decade, Ken has provided stability and sound leadership for the MIT men's soccer program. During his tenure, his teams have experienced success both competitively and, in the classroom," said Dr. G. Anthony Grant, Director of Athletics and DAPER Department Head at MIT.

"Ken's professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the Institute have left a lasting impact on the program and the broader MIT Athletics community. We are sincerely grateful for his service and congratulate him on an outstanding coaching career."

Under Bovell, MIT won two NEWMAC Regular season championships in 2015 and 2021 while qualifying for eight NEWMAC Tournaments and making two championship appearances. He has coached three NEWMAC Rookie of the Year winners and two NEWMAC Players of the Year while also coaching two United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and 10 All-Region players. Additionally, he has had seven players earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors.

"I retire proud of what we have accomplished together and confident that the program is well positioned for continued success," said Bovell. "I believe the time is right for new leadership to build on the strong foundation we have established and guide the team to new heights."

A search for Bovell's successor will begin in the coming weeks.
