Men's Soccer Scores Four Unanswered to Defeat Fitchburg State, 4-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After falling behind 1-0 just three minutes into the match, the MIT men's soccer team got four unanswered goals, including two from Eric Lohse, to secure a 4-1 non-conference victory over Fitchburg St. on Thursday night on Roberts Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 4, Fitchburg St. 1
  • Records: MIT (5-3-4 Overall), Fitchburg State (5-8-2 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Fitchburg got out to a quick 1-0 lead, scoring just over three minutes into the match. Luke Chwalek got into the box and sent a pass to Finn Van Clief who sent the ball back to the top of the box where Erick Estrada-Nunez put his shot past a diving Hernando Jose Ardila.
  • Just 12 minutes later, the Engineers pulled even as a free kick from Colin Kamhi found the leaping head of Colton Pozniak for the goal at 15:16.
  • A throw-in from Eli Mick went right to Lohse, who was able to head the ball into the goal at 21:02.
  • After officials stopped the clock with 10 seconds left in the half following a Fitchburg foul, Gianluca Balestrieri's free kick went directly into the goal to increase MIT's lead to 3-1.
  • Eric Ye drew the attention of the Falcons' goaltender and defense, which set up a pass to an unguarded Lohse in front of goal for the score at 52:43, making it 4-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lohse, who entered the match with two career goals, doubled that with his first multi-goal game.
  • The four goals in the match are the most the Engineers have scored in a game since they scored five against Springfield on October 4, 2025.
  • Ardila made three saves in just over 70 minutes of action to notch his first win of the year. Connor Winkenhofer made his collegiate debut and made two saves.
  • Pozniak scored his first collegiate goal and Kamhi got his first collegiate assist. Ye got his second assist of the season while Balestrieri scored his second goal.

UP NEXT:

  • The Engineers will head to Wheaton for a 2:00 PM match on Saturday, October 17 while the Falcons will host Johnson and Wales on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 PM.
