NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Highlighted by
Diana Martynova's individual epee title, the MIT women's fencing team generated five top 10 performances at the season-opening The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Sunday.
Amber Peng placed sixth in foil while
Lucy Zhang, the Engineers' lone sabre competitor, finished 17
th overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Epee:
- Martynova won all six bouts in her pool, defeated Deeba Ajamian of UNH (15-9), Belle Weng of Smith (15-9), and after her opponent failed to appear in the Round of 8, she topped Kai McFarland of BU (15-7), and Maria Furman of Sacred Heart (15-8) to claim the epee title.
- Hannah Beaver recorded a career-best finish of fifth place. Following a 5-0 outing her pool, she defeated Ziva Benedejcic of Harvard (15-11) and Avneeta Basu of Amherst (15-12) but lost to Kai McFarland of BU (15-7) in the Round of 8.
- Eugenie Cha rounded out the Engineers in ninth place. She went 6-0 in her pool and overpowered Allison Ameo of Tufts (15-3) but was bested by Maria Furman of Sacred Heart (15-9) in the Round of 16.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Foil:
- Peng was 6-0 in her pool, and she defeated Chloe Meyer of URI (15-3) and Samara Berg of Sacred Heart (15-4) before falling to Siwei Hwang of UMass (15-13) in the Round of 8 to rank sixth overall.
- Alison Wang claimed ninth place after a 6-0 showing in her pool, defeating Rebecca Zhang of RISD (15-3), but losing to Frieda Ungerer of Sacred Heart (15-11) in the Round of 16.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Sabre:
- Zhang went 5-0 in her pool and in the Round of 32 she fell to Hong-Lien Luu of Northeastern, 15-13, to finish 17th overall.
UP NEXT:
- MIT will compete in a Northeast Fencing Conference competition on Sunday, November 15 at Brown University.
