No. 13 Squash Advances to CSA Hoehn Cup Championship With 6-3 Win Over No. 16 Navy

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The top-ranked and No. 13 nationally ranked MIT squash defeated fourth seed and No. 16 nationally ranked Navy 6-3 to advance to the championship match of the College Squash Association (CSA) Divisional Championship, Hoehn Cup, which is being held at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. This marks the first championship appearance for the Engineers.  
 
THE BASICS:  

  • Score: MIT 6, Navy 3 
  • Records: MIT 16-5 Overall, Navy 23-6 Overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Isaac Torchinsky-Field and Zachary Starr grabbed 3-1 wins in positions six and seven. Torchinsky-Field defeated Andrew Ko 11-2, 8-11, 11-3, 11-4 while Starr took an 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5 win over Avinash Uppuluri. 
  • Navy got on the board with a 3-1 win in the top ladder and followed with a win in No. 2 as Christian Graziano earned a 3-1 win over Ethan Chan to even the score at two. 
  • Rishabh Sharma took a hard-fought five set win over Matthew Kang to give MIT a 3-2 lead. After Kang forced a fifth set with a 11-6 win in the fifth ladder, Sharma rolled in the fifth, taking it by an 11-2 score.  
  • In the No. 8 ladder, Eddie Xue gave the Engineers a 4-2 advantage after earning a five-set win over Michael Tierney Jr., 11-13, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8. 
  • Alexander Orr got the MIdshipmen to within one with a 3-0 win over John Gunton in position three. 
  • Mero Elmarassy clinched the win for MIT with a 3-1 (8-11, 11-3, 11-4, 13-11) win over Johan Hodgson in the fourth ladder and Sean-Winston Luo concluded the match with a 3-0 win in ladder nine.

  • The Engineers will play Colby in the Championship on Sunday, March 1 at 12:00 PM.
