Women’s Track and Field Collects 14 Top Ten Finishes at River Hawk Invite

BOSTON, Mass. — Krystal Montgomery and Shreya Kalyan moved up the MIT women's track and field program ranks while Jadyn Grant was one of 15 student-athletes to register automatic New England Division III qualifying marks as the Engineers earned 14 top 10 finishes on Friday at the River Hawk Invitational at The TRACK at New Balance.  

Rachel Chen was first in the open long jump, Amalia Toutziaridi's notched a runner-up performance with a PR in the high jump, Lilia Ould-Hammou continued her strong season with a runner-up PR in the shot, and the Engineers also earned four of the top six finishes in the pole vault. 

THE BASICS:

TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events:

  • 60m: Kalyan finished in 7.82 seconds to take fifth in the final but turned in her top performance of the day in the prelims, moving into second on MIT's all-time list with a PR and NED3 auto qualifier of 7.80. JoJo Miller (8.14) in 34th and Chen (8.21) in 43rd also finished in the top 50 for MIT.
  • 200m (Invite): Kalyan also locked down an NED3 spot in the 200m with a time of 25.29, finishing 10th overall in the invited section. JoJo Miller was 27th (26.28). 
  • 200m (Open): Madeline Hon's PR of 26.53 was MIT's top mark. Hon finished 17th in the event.
  • 400m (Invite): Montgomery continued to build on her strong performances during the indoor season, as her time of 56.73 moved her to 4th on MIT's all-time list and 4th in the event.
  • 1000m: Erin Hovendon set the pace for four MIT runners in the field, finishing 10th in 3:01.10. Jordan Lacsamana was 12th in 3:02.10. Both Hovendon and Lacsamana earned automatic NED3 qualifiers. 
  • Mile: Megan Diulus was 35th in 5:12.68, the only MIT competitor in the field and her third appearance in the mile this season.
  • 3000m: Heather Jensen clocked a PR, running a time of 9:57.47 to finish in 3rd place. Jensen registered an NED3 qualifying time with her effort.
  • 60m Hurdles: Grant finished 24th overall in 9.39 to earn an NED3 qualifying mark. Chen also ran in this event, finishing 34th overall (9.62).
  • 4 x 400 Relay: Hovendon, Diulus, Kate Friedman and Courtney McCracken recorded a time of 4:15.17 to finish 20th overall.

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events:

  • High Jump: Amalia Toutziaridi notched a runner-up performance with a PR of 1.65m (5'5"). Toutziaridi made the height on her second attempt after clearing 1.55m and 1.60m on her first attempt.  
  • Pole Vault: Hailey Surace was the runner-up with a height of 4.00m (13' 1.5"). Tessa Baker took 4th place, Elise Doyle was 5th and Katelyn Howard was 6th as all three cleared 3.65m (11' 11.75"). 
  • Long Jump (Open): Chen's final attempt of 5.02m (16' 5.75") was her best as she won the event. Lauren Chi was 11th (4.81m). 
  • Shot Put (Open): Ould-Hammou registered a PR, NED3 qualifier and a 2nd place finish with a throw of 11.83m (38' 9.75"). Olivia Carpenter finished inside the top 10, taking 9th with a PR of 10.36m (34'0").  
  • Shot Put (Invite): Lily Siegelman was 21st with a throw of 11.13m on her final attempt. 
  • Weight Throw (Invite): Macy Brennan and Ould-Hammou recorded NED3 automatic qualifiers. Brennan had the top mark for MIT with a throw of 15.61m (51' 2.75") to claim 7th place. Ould-Hammou was 15th with an effort of 14.62m (47' 11.75").

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Chen participated in three events on the day, recording new PRs in the 60m, 60m hurdles and long jump on the day. 
  • Kalyan now owns top 10 regional marks in the 60m, 200m, and 400m, she is 42nd nationally in the 60m, 33rd nationally in the 200m and 27th in the 400m.
  • Montgomery's time on Friday in the 400m has her 12th on the national qualifying list.
  • Jensen made her debut on the 3000m list, her PR in the event is the 33rd best time in the country.
  • MIT continues to dominate nationally in the pole vault. Doyle's and Baker are tied for 23rd while Surace (2nd) and Howard (10th) remain in the top 10.  

NEXT UP:

  • The Engineers will return to Harvard for the Crimson Open next Friday, February 13.
