Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 13 Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 17 Wentworth, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 13 MIT men's volleyball team fell to No. 17 Wentworth in a close four set match on Saturday afternoon at Tansey Gymnasium. The match featured 34 ties and six lead changes.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Wentworth 3, MIT 1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23) 
  • Records: No. 13 MIT 15-5 Overall, No. 17 Wentworth 12-7 Overall 

 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: The teams exchanged 3-0 spurts to pull even at 7. A Michael Rini kill, and an ace by Colin Zimmerman gave MIT a 15-12 advantage, but the Leopards go to one at 17-16 off an Engineer attacking error. MIT held the hosts off, but Wentworth finally pulled ahead using a 3-0 run with a block from Nicolai Bell and Eli Turner giving the Leopards set point at 24-23. Braeden Baker tied the match with a kill, and kills from Henry Garewal, Nate Toth and Baker secured the set one win, 27-25.  
  • Set 2: A 6-1 run capped by back-to-back aces from Benjamon Moughon put Wentworth up 11-7. A block from Alem Dubcak and Matthew Zegowitz increased the Leopards lead to 16-10. MIT got within three on a block from Maddox Brandenburg and Toth that made it 23-20, but the home team held on for the 25-21 win.  
  • Set 3: Turner gave Wentworth a 5-2 lead, but MIT responded, using a 3-0 run to tie the match at five. Consecutive Toth kills put the Engineers up 8-7, and the visitors built a 15-11 lead off a Baker ace and kill. A 6-1 run put the Leopards up by one (17-16), but Toth quickly tied the match with a kill. The Leopards regained the lead with a kill from Turner securing a 25-20 win.  
  • Set 4: The teams stayed close in the early portions of the fourth. Kills from Duback put Wentworth up 15-12 but MIT chipped back into the set with a kill from Toth making it a one-point set at 17-16. The Leopards pulled ahead by three, but the Engineers answered with a Garewal kill tying the set at 23 but Wentworth got the next two points for the win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Garewal posted a match and career-best 18 kills and 11 digs. Baker put up 13 and Toth added 11. 
  • Bradenburg had a match-best six blocks. 
  • Zimmerman had 49 assists in the match. 
  • Turner finished with 16 kills for Wentworth while Brayden Green collected 44 assists and seven digs.

  • MIT is back at Rockwell Cage on Wednesday, March 18 as they welcome Hobart for a pivotal UVC Contest at 7:00 PM.
