No. 14 Men's Volleyball Defeats SUNY Poly in Straight Sets

UTICA, N.Y. – The No. 14 MIT men's volleyball team took on SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Thursday in the Wildcat Field House and earned a 3-0 sweep of the Wildcats. This is the third-straight sweep of the Engineers, who have won seven of their last 10 matches. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, SUNY Poly 0 (25-15, 28-26, 25-15) 
  • Records: No. 14 MIT (18-5 Overall), SUNY Polytechnic Institute (17-11 Overall)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: MIT controlled the first set, only trailing at the beginning of the set when an attack error gave SUNY Poly a 1-0 lead. An ace from Henry Garewal gave the Engineers the 17-8 advantage and another ace, this time from Nate Toth, secured the 25-15 set one win for MIT. 
  • Set 2: A kill from Joshua Slater gave the Wildcats a 9-7 lead which they held on to until an attacking error tied the match at 15. Though the Engineers held close, they would not take the lead until another attack error gave them the 23-22 lead. The teams continued a back-and-forth set, which featured 16 ties and eight lead changes, until two kills from Toth and another error gave MIT the second set, 28-26.  
  • Set 3: A 5-1 run capped by a Garewal kill put the Engineers in the lead, 11-5. MIT continued to build on its lead as a kill from Hansen Fan gave them the third set by a 25-15 score. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Toth put up a match-high 16 kills followed by 10 from Garewal. 
  • Black had a match-high three aces.  
  • Colin Zimmerman dished out 36 assists, and George Chang had 10 digs. 
  • Quincy Stayton led SUNY Poly with six kills.

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT gets back into UVC play with a 7:00 PM match against St. John Fisher on Friday, March 27.
