Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 16 Men's Volleyball Defeats Elmira in Three Sets

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep of UVC foe Elmira on Friday night at Rockwell Cage.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Elmira 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) 
  • Records: MIT 14-3 Overall (2-1 UVC), Elmira 8-7 Overall (0-2 UVC)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Set 1: Elmira held an early lead before the Engineers went on a 4-0 run capped by an Alexander Garrett ace to take the 7-4 lead. From there, MIT held on to the lead as an 11-2 run put them up by 11 and a kill from Braeden Baker secured the 25-15 set on win. 
  • Set 2: The Engineers opened the set on a 6-0 run that featured two aces from Nathaniel Black. Back-to-back attacking errors from the Soaring Eagles put MIT up 11-2, but a 5-2 run got Elmira within six at 16-10. With MIT holding set point, the visitors scored three-straight to make it 24-19, but a service error gave the Engineers the 25-19 win. 
  • Set 3: MIT once again built a substantial early lead, going up 11-2. A Luke Jata kill cut the Engineer lead to 12-7, but the hosts quickly responded with a 4-0 run. Another 4-0 spurt from Elmira cut the MIT advantage to 19-14, but the Engineers held on as kills from Hansen Fan and Garrett secured the 25-19 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Baker led MIT with 10 kills while Garrett and Nate Toth each had five. 
  • Colin Zimmerman paced MIT 24 assists and five digs. 
  • Black picked up four aces. 
  • Maddox Brandenburg, Matthew Louis, and Toth all had three blocks. 
  • Jata paced the visitors with 11 kills while Erik Ziemblicki collected 16 assists. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers remain at home in conference play as they welcome No. 8 NYU to Rockwell Cage on Saturday, March 7 for a 1:00 PM first serve.
