BOSTON, Mass. – Olivia Scarpaci recorded her 100th career hit in game one while Arianna Kumar hit a walk-off single in extra innings in game two as the MIT softball team swept Springfield in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Boston University softball field.

THE BASICS:

  • Scores:
    • Game 1: MIT 4, Springfield 1
    • Game 2: MIT 7, Springfield 6 (8 Innings)
  • Records: MIT (21-3 Overall, 7-1 NEWMAC); Springfield College (14-5 Overall, 5-3 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE:

  • The Engineers got to Amelia DeRosa early, plating four runs in the first inning. Layla Thiessen and Delaney Benevides worked back-to-back walks to open the first and scored on a two-out single from Lauren Sundquist. Holland Poe and Olivia Scarpaci both had RBI singles with two strikes to account for the final two runs of the inning.
  • Taylor Falotico and DeRosa had back-to-back two out singles in the third, but Sharona Huang got a groundout to Kumar at short to end the frame.
  • DeRosa got the Pride on the board in the fifth with an RBI single, but the Pride would strand two more runners on base to keep the score 4-1.
  • Haley Ball hit a single to left to open the seventh, but Layla Thiessen sent a perfect throw to second to get Ball out. Falotico then hit an infield single, but Huang got two groundouts to secure the 4-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Huang moves to 5-1 with her third complete game of the season. She allowed just one run on nine hits with one walk and three Ks. DeRosa went six and fell to 9-4 as she allowed nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
  • Scarpaci recorded her 100th career hit with her single in the first, finishing the game 3-3. Poe and Maggie Feng also had multi-hit games for MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO:

  • Yet again MIT struck first with a double from Ladd scoring Benevides to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
  • Kate Katsetos walked to leadoff the second and scored on a double from Ball to tie the game.
  • Poe led off the fourth with a triple down the right-field line and scored on a double to center from Julia Mattiace. A sacrifice fly from Thiessen gave MIT a 3-1 lead and got two more runs off an error by the Pride off the bat of Ladd to put them up 5-1.
  • The Pride responded with a three-run fifth to cut into the Engineer lead. Carissa Pecchia doubled home the first two runs of the inning, and the third run came across on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brynlee Eckles. A single from Ball loaded the bases, but Sarah Blackett got Taylor Falotico to groundout and end the inning.
  • A leadoff triple by DeRosa in the sixth allowed the Pride to pull even as a Reilly Hunter sacrifice fly plated DeRosa to make it five all. Ladd tripled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but was left stranded.
