No. 11 Women’s Track and Field Leads After Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The No. 11 MIT women's track and field team leads the overall standings following the first day of competition at the 2026 NEWMAC Women's Track and Field Championships, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  

THE BASICS: 

  • Team Score: 96.5 points (1st of 10) 
  • Team Standings: 1. MIT (96.5); 2. Wheaton (23.5); T3. Smith (14.5); T3. Springfield (14.5); T5. Babson (14); T5. Wellesley (14); 7. Coast Guard (7.5); 8. WPI (5); 9. Mount Holyoke (4.5); 10. Salve Regina (1) 

TOP PERFORMERS - Track Events: 

  • 10,000m: Ava Hartman repeated as champion and set a NEWMAC meet record, winning the event and earning All-Conference first team honors in 37:16.10.  
  • 100m Prelims: JoJo Miller advanced to Saturday's final with the seventh-fastest time in the prelims, 12.37. 
  • 100m Hurdles Prelims:  Jadyn Grant posted the fourth-best time in prelims at 15.18 to advance to Saturday's final.Rachel Chen just missed advancing to the final with a ninth-place finish (16.09). 

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events: 

  • Hammer: Lily Siegelman's mark of 49.76m (163' 3") captured the NEWMAC title and earned her All-Conference first team honors.  
  • Javelin: MIT swept the All-Conference honors in the javelin, with Elaine Wang repeating as champion with a throw of40.94m (134' 4") and Alexa Bohanon claiming runner-up honors with a mark of 36.67m (123' 7"). 
  • Long Jump: Katie Kempff claimed runner-up honors and an All-Conference second team nod with a jump of 5.36m (17' 7"). Paige Dzenutis was 6th with a mark of 5.30m (17'4.75"). 
  • Pole Vault: MIT was dominant in the pole vault, as Katelyn Howard and Hailey Surace claimed a 1-2 finish by clearing 3.90m (12' 9.5"). Howard claimed her third straight NEWMAC title in the event. Elise Doyle tied for third and Tessa Baker was fifth as both cleared 3.55m (11'7.75"). Overall, MIT held four of the top five spots in the event. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Engineers won four of the day's five events and held the top two podium spots in two of them. The top two finishers in each event earn All-Conference honors.  
  • Howard repeated as NEWMAC Champion in the pole vault, while Surace was second team for the third straight year.  
  • Hartman earned All-Conference first team honors for the second time. 
  • Kempff improved on last year's finish in the long jump, moving from third to second to earn All-Conference recognition.
